In a shocking incident that has left a Wollongong community reeling, a three-year-old boy has been left in a serious but stable condition after being reversed over by a car in the driveway of a Bellambi home.
The terrifying moment unfolded at about 9am on Wednesday when the 64-year-old female driver, who is not related to the child, allegedly reversed her car out of the driveway, striking the toddler.
Neighbours rushed to the child’s aid, with one resident, Morgan Quirk, describing the harrowing scene. “One of the neighbours was getting a skip bin and I could hear him yelling, ‘stop, stop, stop,'” she said.
Ms Quirk recounted how she rushed to the scene, where she witnessed another neighbour jacking up the car to free the trapped child. “I came running out [of my home] as one of the neighbours jacked the car up because [the boy] was under the car,” she said.
The child was treated at a nearby oval by a doctor and critical care paramedic before being airlifted to Sydney Children’s Hospital. Nathan O’Brien of the New South Wales Ambulance service said the boy suffered serious facial and neck injuries.
Superintendent O’Brien, who has dealt with numerous similar incidents throughout his 18-year career, expressed his concern about the frequency of such tragedies. “I’ve had to deal with many of them,” he said.
“But we have great support services in place to deal with the cognitive load of those jobs,” he added.
The incident has sparked a police investigation, with the 64-year-old driver taken to Wollongong Hospital for mandatory testing.
