In a shocking development, two female hikers were found dead in remote bushland in Victoria’s high country on Friday afternoon. The tragic discovery was made by fellow hikers in the Nelse area, near Lendenfeld Point, at around 1 pm.
The identities of the women, believed to be in their 20s or 30s, are currently unknown, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward. The area is so remote that officers had to be flown in by helicopter, winched to the ground, and then trek for about two hours before reaching the bodies.
“At this stage, the deaths appear non-suspicious,” police said in a statement. “Due to the conditions and isolated location, police will camp at the scene overnight.” The bodies are expected to be removed from the scene on Saturday.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are appealing for information from the public to assist in identifying the women involved. “We are not aware of any current missing person reports,” police added.
