A six-year-old girl is fighting for her life in hospital after a horrific two-car crash at a notorious ‘death trap’ intersection in Adelaide’s north left a total of six people, including four children, injured.
Emergency services rushed to the scene at the intersection of King Road and Penfield Road in Virginia shortly after 11am on Sunday, following terrifying reports that a Toyota van and a Toyota ute had collided.
The young girl, who was a passenger in the van, was found with critical injuries and was rushed to hospital where she remains in a life-threatening condition.
Also in the van was a 42-year-old woman and two other children, aged 10 and 11, who were all taken to hospital with minor injuries. A 37-year-old man and a four-year-old girl travelling in the ute were also injured and required hospital treatment.
The intersection was closed for more than six hours as Major Crash investigators examined the devastating scene, with furious locals revealing the corner has a long and tragic history of serious accidents.
It’s understood at least three motorists have been killed at the same spot in the last three decades, with fed-up residents now demanding action before another tragedy occurs.
‘Been living on this over here for about 25 years and there’s been multiple accidents,’ nearby resident Terry Arharidis told Nine News in disbelief. ‘Probably every 10 days to two weeks there’s an accident and some of those have resulted in deaths.’
He slammed the intersection as a known killer. ‘People have died here… it’s going to continue happening,’ Mr Arharidis said, joining a chorus of locals calling for a simple traffic island to be installed to save lives.
Police are now appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the horror smash to contact Crime Stoppers immediately.
