Chilling Twist in Hunt for Missing 4yo Gus: Former Lead Detective Reveals Foul Play Fears as Search Enters Grim New Phase
- Former homicide squad detective Gary Jubelin suspects police are investigating foul play in Gus’ disappearance
- The search for the 4-year-old has been scaled back after a massive 10-day effort involving helicopters, drones, and Aboriginal trackers
- Gus’ family has been targeted by vicious online trolls, with a friend pleading for compassion and understanding
A haunting new theory has emerged in the desperate search for missing 4-year-old Augustus “Gus” Lamont, with a former lead detective revealing fears of foul play. Gary Jubelin, who led the investigation into the disappearance of William Tyrrell, believes police are now exploring the possibility of intervention in Gus’ vanishing.
Gus was last seen playing in the sand at his family’s remote sheep station near Yunta, South Australia, on September 27. The search for the young boy was scaled back on Tuesday after a massive 10-day effort, but Jubelin says the fact that police are running “other lines of inquiries concurrently with the search” suggests they are looking at all options.
“What they’ve got to establish is, has Gus disappeared through misadventure or is there some form of intervention?” Jubelin told Nine’s Today show. “I’m heartened by the fact that they’re doing that… it’s difficult for the families involved and even for the police.”
Meanwhile, Gus’ family has been subjected to a barrage of vicious and hateful comments online, with a friend and former neighbour, Alex Thomas, pleading for compassion and understanding. “This family – this gentle and loving family – they’re not headlines, they are not a spectacle,” Thomas told the Adelaide Advertiser. “They are real people who are hurting beyond belief.”
The search for Gus has now been handed over to the Missing Persons Section of South Australia Police, with Commissioner Linda Williams revealing that further lines of inquiry are being pursued. “We will never give up hope of finding Gus,” she said.
In a bizarre twist, a second footprint was found near a dam on Monday, but police have since dismissed it as unrelated to the search. A special drone with infra-red capabilities was deployed in the search, with results still being analysed.
As the search for Gus enters a grim new phase, Jubelin’s chilling theory has raised more questions than answers. What really happened to the 4-year-old boy who vanished in the South Australian outback? Only time will tell.
