- Kylie Cook’s worst fears were confirmed when police found her daughter Jayda’s body in her Marrickville unit on her 26th birthday
- Jayda, a budding musician, had been missing for over a week, sparking a frantic search by her family
- Kylie is now fighting to raise funds to bring her daughter’s body back to Queensland and give her a proper farewell
Kylie Cook will never forget the devastating phone call she received on her daughter’s 26th birthday. It was the news no mother ever wants to hear: her child had been found dead in her Sydney apartment. Jayda Cook, a vibrant and independent young woman, had been planning to celebrate her special day with family and friends, but instead, her life was tragically cut short.
The Mackay mother had been trying to contact Jayda for over a week, but her calls and messages went unanswered. Kylie’s “gut feeling” told her something was seriously wrong, and she was right. Police discovered Jayda’s body in her unit on Addison Rd in Marrickville, Sydney’s inner west, at approximately 9:15 am on October 4.
“It was actually on her birthday, almost to the exact time she was born, when they rang me back and said they’d found a body – and it was Jayda,” Kylie tearfully recalled. The last time Kylie spoke to Jayda was on September 6, when her daughter was ecstatic about becoming an aunt and making plans to meet her new niece in Brisbane.
Jayda, a talented musician and performing arts student at JMC Academy, had been living in Sydney to pursue her dreams. Her family described her as “beautiful, independent, and headstrong.” She had moved to Sydney to escape the difficulties of her past and build a better life for herself. However, her sudden death has left her loved ones in shock and despair.
Kylie is now facing the daunting task of bringing Jayda’s body back to Queensland and giving her a fitting farewell. But she’s struggling to cope with the financial burden, estimated to be in the thousands of dollars. A close friend has set up a GoFundMe page to support Kylie in her time of need.
“I just want to get my baby home so we can say our goodbyes and get her things,” Kylie pleaded. The outpouring of kindness from strangers and loved ones has been overwhelming, and Kylie is grateful for the support.
Jayda’s death is not being treated as suspicious, but a crime scene has been established, and an investigation into the cause of her death is ongoing. As Kylie navigates the dark days ahead, she clings to the memories of her bright and feisty daughter, who had so much life left to live.
