Tragedy has struck the bodybuilding world with the sudden death of Indian strongman Varinder Singh Ghuman, who represented Arnold Schwarzenegger’s brand, at the age of 42. The actor and bodybuilder, known as India’s “He-Man”, passed away on Friday after suffering a heart attack during shoulder surgery at Fortis Hospital in Amritsar.
According to his family, Varinder was experiencing shoulder pain before he went to hospital to get checked. His manager, Yadvinder Singh, said the bodybuilder was undergoing surgery when he went into cardiac arrest. “We had never expected that he would meet this fate,” said fellow bodybuilder Harminder Dullowal. “It is very difficult to accept this loss.”
Varinder was a legendary figure in the Indian bodybuilding community, with a herculean physique that inspired countless fans throughout his incredible weightlifting journey. He won Mr India in 2009 and represented Schwarzenegger’s brand in Asia, securing the runner-up spot at Mr Asia and becoming the first ever Indian bodybuilder to earn an International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation (IFBB) pro card. He was also known for being the world’s first ever vegetarian bodybuilder.
In addition to his bodybuilding career, Varinder was an actor, starring in films such as Tiger 3, Kabaddi Once Again, Marjaavaan, and Roar: Tigers of the Sundarbans. He owned a gym and was selected by Schwarzenegger to represent his health products in 2013.
Social media has been flooded with tributes to the late athlete, with fans expressing their shock and sadness at his sudden passing. “Very sad news RIP God bless his soul and bless his all family and friends,” wrote one fan on Facebook. Another said, “It’s really sad news. He was an ideal for the youth. It’s really horrible news. May he rest in peace.”
