A gruesome discovery has shaken the quiet town of Armidale, with the bloodied body of an elderly man found in a home on Monday morning. The victim, believed to be in his 70s, suffered multiple injuries to his upper body, sparking a massive police investigation.
According to Detective Inspector Kingsley Chapman, a friend of the victim made the chilling discovery shortly after 8am, prompting a desperate triple-0 call. “The investigation is in the early stages; inquiries will be made and we’re seeking the community’s assistance,” he urged.
A 25-year-old man, who lived in the house with the victim, was taken to hospital for assessment. While not treated as a suspect, police are eager to speak to him as soon as he is medically able. “He’s definitely someone of interest that police will be speaking to,” Detective Inspector Chapman revealed.
As forensic officers scoured the Markham Street property, specialist police from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad were called in to support local detectives. The Strike Force Kastelic investigation is expected to take several days, with police already speaking to several witnesses.
“Specialist police are forensically examining the scene, taking photographs, documenting … and looking for anything of interest to the investigation,” Detective Inspector Chapman explained. The community is urged to come forward with any information that may aid the investigation.
