Alexandra Kay has spoken out in defence of her friend Maggie Baugh, who has been unfairly targeted by Nicole Kidman fans following her split from Keith Urban. Kay clarified that Baugh has a boyfriend and is “very happy” together, slamming the romance rumours as “absolutely not true”.
In a recent chat with Evan Paul for Taste of Country, Kay addressed the speculation surrounding Urban and his guitarist, Baugh. “Honestly, I was heartbroken for them because the media scrutiny is insane and the things that people say… They’re like, stirring up rumours about Maggie Baugh,” Kay said.
Kay also confirmed that Baugh has a boyfriend who she has met, sharing: “She’s very happy. She has nothing to do with that whole [Nicole and Keith] relationship.” Kay expressed her sadness for everybody involved, saying: “I feel sad for everybody involved, that people are doing that and picking apart their personal life.”
Baugh faced backlash from Kidman fans online after footage surfaced on September 26 showing Urban reworking his love song Fighter, which was long thought to be inspired by Kidman. The original lyric is: “When they’re tryna get to you, baby, I’ll be the fighter”. Instead, Urban sang: “When they’re tryna get to you, Maggie, I’ll be your guitar player”.
Kidman fans flocked to Baugh’s Instagram account, leaving bitter messages for the talented musician. “It is so trashy to do this to a song inspired by his wife. It’s the ultimate ick,” one person wrote. However, Baugh has kept a dignified silence and instead remained focused on promoting her music with Urban.
Urban and Kidman ended their marriage after 19 years, with Kidman citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the divorce in paperwork filed in Tennessee. Baugh was on tour with Urban on the American leg of his High and Alive tour when the news broke, and was immediately blamed for the break-up.
