It’s been over two months since Dezi Freeman, 56, allegedly shot and killed two police officers in Porepunkah, Victoria, and now a police taskforce has launched a desperate bid to catch the fugitive. Police Taskforce Summit, led by a detective inspector from the Crime Command State Anti-Gangs Division, will take over the search for Freeman, who has been on the run since August 26.
Freeman, also known as Desmond Filby, is believed to have fled into Mount Buffalo National Park, which has now fully reopened to the public. However, extensive searches by air and on the ground have failed to locate him. Parks Victoria staff will be patrolling the area, and police are urging the public to remain vigilant.
“I strongly urge anyone with any information at all, no matter how small you think it may be, to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers,” Assistant Commissioner Martin O’Brien said. “This could be sightings of Freeman, information you’re hearing in your local communities, even suspicious activity on your property – whatever it is, we want to hear from you. As always, this can be done anonymously.”
A $1 million reward remains in place for information leading to Freeman’s arrest, and police are counting on the public’s help to bring him to justice. With the search now entering its third month, police are becoming increasingly desperate to catch the fugitive and bring closure to the families of the two police officers who were tragically killed.
The search for Freeman has been one of the largest and most complex in Victorian history, with a significant number of resources pumped into the effort. However, so far, no trace of him has been found. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward and help bring an end to the search.
