- Police claim the seizure has stopped a potential 310,000 individual street deals and prevented millions of dollars from falling into the hands of organised crime.
In a shocking turn of events, an Adelaide woman has been charged over her alleged involvement in a major cocaine smuggling operation. The 30-year-old, from Prospect, is accused of attempting to bring 62kg of the illicit substance into Australia, hidden inside car parts imported from Germany.
The investigation, led by the Australian Federal Police (AFP), began in February when Australian Border Force (ABF) officers uncovered a suspicious shipment at Port Botany in NSW. Inside a wheel-balancing machine, officers found 62 tightly wrapped packages, each containing about 1kg of powder. Tests confirmed the substance was cocaine.
“This seizure of these drugs has stopped a potential 310,000 individual street deals from causing significant harm to our communities and economy,” said AFP acting Superintendent Simon Lalic. “The AFP is committed to investing in strong and effective working relationships with law enforcement partners to combat drug trafficking.”
The woman, who has been granted bail, faces three serious charges, including importing a commercial quantity of cocaine and attempting to possess the drug. If convicted, she could face life behind bars. She is due to face Adelaide Magistrates Court on January 9.
The arrest is the latest in a series of crackdowns on organised crime in South Australia. Police say the seizure is a significant blow to the illicit drug trade, which has devastating consequences for individuals and communities.
