In a heart-wrenching tragedy, a teenage bride has taken her own life after her groom’s family allegedly blasted her wedding dress as ‘too revealing’. Lyaman Mammadli, 19, died just days after tying the knot with 33-year-old Elnur in Mingachevir, Azerbaijan.
According to her father, Murad Bayramov, Lyaman was ‘humiliated’ by the criticism, which he claims was sparked by her off-the-shoulder wedding gown. ‘My daughter’s groom and his parents caused a fight in my home because of her wedding dress,’ Mr Bayramov said.
‘They said, “What a disgrace. How could you let your daughter wear such a shameful, revealing wedding dress?” We replied that it was a normal gown – the kind many brides wear. But they wouldn’t calm down and kept arguing.’
The argument allegedly continued into the next day, with Mr Bayramov claiming the family’s feud is still ongoing, even after Lyaman’s death. ‘I refused to let him stay at my daughter’s funeral and kicked out the new husband,’ he said.
Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding Lyaman’s tragic death, which has sent shockwaves through the community. Social media has been flooded with tributes for the young bride, with many describing her death as ‘senseless’ and a ‘tragedy’.
Lyaman’s family has spoken out about the devastating impact of the groom’s family’s criticism, revealing the young bride was unable to cope with the humiliation. ‘My daughter couldn’t endure it,’ Mr Bayramov said. ‘In her distress and emotional turmoil, she ended her life.’
Azerbaijan, where Lyaman lived, is a Muslim-majority nation, with many adhering to strict Islamic dress codes. However, Lyaman’s personal faith has not been reported.
As the community mourns the loss of this young life, Lyaman’s family has called for support and understanding. ‘We need to talk about the impact of bullying and criticism on young people’s mental health,’ Mr Bayramov said.
