A young police officer’s reckless behaviour has sparked outrage after he allegedly drove recklessly and crashed into a car during a high-speed chase in Sydney’s west.
The 27-year-old constable was behind the wheel of an unmarked police vehicle when he and other officers spotted a Mazda SUV with fraudulent registration plates on Jamison Rd, Penrith, about 7.45am on April 30.
Police attempted to stop the SUV on Thornton Dr, but the driver allegedly refused to pull over, sparking a heart-stopping pursuit. In a shocking turn of events, the constable allegedly drove over a median strip, onto the wrong side of the road, and deliberately rammed the Mazda at the intersection of Mulgoa and Castlereagh roads.
The impact pushed the Mazda into another car, leaving it undriveable, although miraculously, no one was injured. Despite senior officers deciding to stop the pursuit, the constable allegedly kept driving and hit a parked SUV on Village Crescent, leaving it in a state of disrepair.
The Mazda’s occupants — a 41-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman — were later arrested and charged, and remain before the courts. The constable has been issued a court attendance notice to appear before Penrith Local Court on December 11, and his employment status is under review.
In a statement, police said the constable is being “managed in the workplace” pending the outcome of the investigation. The incident has raised serious questions about the conduct of police officers and their use of force during high-speed pursuits.
