- Jennifer Mui Len Chin, 49, avoids jail after stabbing her daughter’s 14-year-old boyfriend in her Perth home
- Chin claimed she thought the teen was an intruder when she found him semi-naked in her house
- The court heard the boy had been sneaked into the house by her daughter, who was having a secret romance with him
Jennifer Mui Len Chin, a 49-year-old Perth mother, has walked free from court after stabbing her daughter’s teenage boyfriend, whom she mistakenly believed was a naked, armed intruder in her home.
In a dramatic and intense confrontation, Chin stabbed the 14-year-old boy twice in the chest after finding him hiding under a doona in her bedroom. The court heard that the boy had been sneaked into the house by her daughter, who was having a secret romance with him, despite Chin’s strict Christian beliefs forbidding her daughter from having a boyfriend.
Chin’s lawyer, Mark Andrews, described the “chaotic, crazy few seconds” between the bedroom and the front door, stating that his client did not know if her daughter was in the bedroom “under threat, force or coercion”. However, prosecutor Chadd Graham rejected the self-defence claim, arguing that there were no grounds for Chin’s belief that the boy was a home invader who presented a threat.
In a heartfelt statement, Chin said she was “panicking” and “scared” when she found the bare-chested teen in her husband’s bedroom. She claimed she asked her six-year-old son to fetch her a knife, which she used to stab the boy near the front door of her Parkwood home.
The court heard that Chin failed to call triple-0 after the teenager left the home with her daughter, with Graham suggesting she knew she had gone “too far”.
Judge Belinda Lonsdale handed Chin a three-year jail term, suspended for two years, ordering her to undertake supervision and program requirements.
As Chin walked out of the court building with her lawyer, it was clear that this “moment of madness” would have a lasting impact on all parties involved.
