Australia Set to be Dazzled by the Biggest Supermoon of 2025: Here’s When and Where to Witness the Breathtaking Spectacle
- The Beaver Moon, the second of three consecutive supermoons in 2025, will light up the skies on Wednesday night, reaching its closest point to Earth at just 356,000km away.
- Stargazers can witness the spectacular supermoon from sunset onwards, with observational astronomer Professor Michael Brown assuring that “pretty much any time on Wednesday night and Thursday morning is gonna be fine” to see the glowing spectacle.
- The supermoon will be visible across Australia, as long as clouds stay clear, offering a breathtaking sight that is up to 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than usual.
Australians are in for a treat as the biggest and brightest supermoon of 2025 is set to dazzle the skies on Wednesday night. The Beaver Moon, named for the time of year in the Northern Hemisphere when beavers start building their dams in preparation for winter, will reach its fullest at 12.20am AEDT on Thursday.
According to Professor Michael Brown, an observational astronomer from Monash University, the supermoon will look spectacular all night, and stargazers don’t need to worry too much about timing. “The distance between the Earth and the moon is not gonna change particularly much throughout the night, so pretty much any time on Wednesday night and Thursday morning is gonna be fine,” he told 7NEWS.com.au.
The supermoon will be visible from sunset onwards, and Professor Brown assured that all you need is clear skies to witness the breathtaking spectacle. “Even if you can just get a small gap in the clouds and have a look at it briefly then that works,” he added.
This Beaver Moon is the second of three consecutive supermoons in 2025, following one on October 8. If you miss this one, don’t worry – the final supermoon of the year, the Cold Moon, will be visible on December 4.
