- US President Donald Trump hailed him as ‘very brave’ and worthy of ‘great respect’
- A GoFundMe page set up to support him has raised over $320,000 in just hours
In the chaotic aftermath of the Bondi terror attack, which left at least 16 people dead and 42 injured, a hero has emerged from the carnage. Ahmed al Ahmed, a 43-year-old local fruit shop owner, has been revealed as the brave individual who tackled and disarmed one of the terrorists.
Footage of the incident shows Mr Ahmed, a father of two, crouching behind the 50-year-old terrorist before rushing towards him and engaging in a fierce scuffle. With his right arm around the killer’s shoulder, he manages to wrestle the high-calibre weapon from his grip with the other.
As the terrorist falls to the ground, Mr Ahmed points the weapon at him, holding him at bay until police arrive. Tragically, Mr Ahmed was shot twice in the process, but his actions undoubtedly saved countless lives.
But Mr Ahmed’s bravery was not the only remarkable act of heroism that day. In the immediate aftermath of the attack, furious bystanders, including a shirtless man and another individual, Jacob Barnfield, unleashed brutal revenge on the shooters.
Jacob, who was interviewed on Sunrise, described the horrific scenes he witnessed as he approached the pedestrian bridge where the attack occurred. ‘I was trying to get closer to him, just to try and disarm him,’ he said. ‘But the closer you got to the shooters, the more bodies you saw on the floor. Just body parts on the floor, next to the bodies.’
Jacob admitted to kicking one of the terrorists in the head, saying ‘I don’t regret it at all. He deserved every bit.’ The shirtless man, who has not been named, was also seen stomping on the killer’s head before police ushered him away from the scene.
Both men have been labelled heroes, but Mr Ahmed’s selfless act has captured the hearts of the nation. A GoFundMe page set up to support him has raised over $320,000 in just hours, including a donation of $99,999 from Jewish investment banker Bill Ackman.
‘After witnessing the extraordinary actions of the hero who helped disarm one of the attackers during the Bondi tragedy, an act that prevented the loss of countless more lives, we felt compelled to act,’ the fundraising page reads.
US President Donald Trump described Mr Ahmed’s actions as ‘very brave’, saying ‘A very brave person actually who went and attacked frontally one of the shooters and saved a lot of lives. A very brave person who is right now in the hospital and seriously wounded.’
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also praised Mr Ahmed’s bravery, saying ‘We have seen Australians today run towards danger in order to help others. These Australians are heroes, and their bravery has saved lives.’
