Heroic Bystander’s Desperate Bid to Disarm Gunman Captured on Chilling Footage: Australia Mourns Worst Mass Shooting in Decades
- Dramatic dashcam video shows a brave onlooker wrestling with alleged attacker Sajid Akram, 50, seconds before the horrific rampage on Bondi Beach
- At least 15 innocent lives lost and over 40 injured in Australia’s worst mass shooting since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre
- Chilling footage reveals the moment the heroic bystander, later shot, attempts to grab the firearm from Sajid Akram, father of alleged co-attacker Naveed Akram, 24
- Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirms the attackers were “motivated by Islamic State ideology” as the nation grapples with the devastating aftermath
The heart-stopping footage, captured on a dashcam on Sunday evening, shows a man in a purple top fearlessly tackling Sajid Akram near a car close to the footbridge. As the two men struggle, the brave bystander appears to gain control of the firearm, motioning towards Sajid in a desperate bid to keep him at bay.
In the chaotic moments that follow, the man is seen stepping backwards, still clutching the gun, as Sajid attempts to regain possession of the weapon. Tragically, the heroic bystander was later shot, leaving the nation in shock and mourning.
Witness Jenny, who captured the dramatic footage on her dashcam, described the harrowing scene, saying she initially mistook the sound of gunfire for fireworks. “A car with its doors open, an older man and a middle-aged man were rolling on the ground, fighting,” she wrote on social media. “I then glanced to my left and saw a man in his early 20s standing on the bridge… He was no more than 6m or 7m away from me.”
As the full extent of the tragedy unfolded, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that the attackers were “motivated by Islamic State ideology”. The devastating attack, which left 15 people dead and over 40 injured, is Australia’s worst mass shooting since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, and the deadliest anti-Semitic act in the nation’s history.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Jenny paid tribute to the heroic bystander, saying, “The elderly man, instead of running, rushed towards the danger, fought desperately to grab the gun, and grappled with him fiercely. Such a civilian hero shouldn’t be forgotten!”
As the nation comes to terms with the devastating loss of life, one thing is clear: the bravery and selflessness of the heroic bystander will never be forgotten.
