- Exclusive footage reveals the shocking aftermath of the attack, with the two victims’ bodies visible next to each other on the ground.
- Their identities have not been released, but their families are said to be “proud” of their heroic actions.
In a shocking twist, the newly released footage shows the two victims making a desperate bid to disarm Naveed, who is seen struggling to regain control of the gun.
The clip, taken from a dashcam, reveals the intense moment the two bystanders spring into action, with the man in the purple shirt seen sitting on the road, holding the gun after ripping it from Naveed’s grasp.
A woman stands nearby, with both victims appearing to be unaware of the danger that is about to unfold.
Mere moments later, Naveed is seen walking back to the bridge, gun in hand, and opening fire in the direction of the pair who had attempted to disarm him.
The footage then cuts to drone footage of the firefight, showing the two bodies laying next to each other on the ground.
Locals Monika and Tim Holtsbaum, who witnessed the attack, have spoken out about the heroic actions of the two victims.
“Shots were fired before this gentleman ran over and effectively tackled this guy [Akram] into the street to grab his rifle off him,” Tim told the Australian Financial Review.
“I saw the dad fall down… and then I jumped in the back of the car to shield my girls and to pull them down so they didn’t see anything,” Monika said.
The Holtsbaums, who were at the scene with their two young daughters, described the moment as “confronting” and “amazing.”
“For him to be brave enough to run over to a man with a rifle after shots had been fired to try and take his gun from him was pretty amazing,” Tim said.
“Very confronting to see the footage back, to see him having his life taken, which is just the ultimate kind of sacrifice.”
Their comments come as a social media user praised the two victims, saying: “Many people may not know that at the very beginning of the incident, two individuals were among the first to identify the gunman and bravely attempted to disarm him.”
“Tragically, they were shot and killed in the process. They were heroes too. They stepped forward in the face of extreme danger.”
A passer-by also hailed the man in the purple shirt as a “hero” after watching the struggle unfold.
“We saw this man heroically try to disarm this evil terrorist. His family needs to know he (was) trying to save lives. He is a hero,” they wrote.
