In a devastating turn of events, a selfless farmer and volunteer firefighter has lost his life while battling a raging bushfire in Western Australia’s Great Southern region. Jaxon Peakall, 34, was hit by a falling tree on Tuesday night while patrolling a road in Mindarabin, approximately 400 kilometres southeast of Perth.
The father-of-one, described as a “true champion” by his loved ones, suffered critical injuries and tragically died at the scene. The news of his death has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community, with tributes pouring in on social media to remember the kind-hearted local.
Peakall had been fighting a large bushfire in the Shire of Gnowangerup when the tragedy occurred. The blaze, which burned through more than 5540 hectares, triggered multiple emergency level warnings before being brought under control.
“It is a tragic reminder of the dangers our brave firefighters face, putting their lives on the line to help protect the communities they live in,” Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm said. “Our thoughts are with Jaxon’s family, friends, volunteer colleagues and the wider Borden community.”
In a heartfelt tribute, North Albany Football Club, where Peakall was a beloved member, described him as a “loved team mate” who always brought happiness and laughter to the club. “Rest in peace Jacko, a true champion,” the club posted on Facebook.
Another emotional tribute labelled Peakall as a “once-in-a-lifetime friend” who was always helping someone. “There were always laughs with Jaxon, and he cared deeply for others. He was pure go-go-go,” the post read.
This tragedy marks the second fire-related fatality in the region, following the death of Shire of Ravensthorpe deputy president Mark Mudie earlier in December. An investigation into Peakall’s death is ongoing.
