The Australian racing community is reeling in shock and grief after the sudden and tragic death of rising star jockey Bronte Simpson, who was killed in a single-car accident on Monday night.
The 24-year-old’s life was cut short when her vehicle crashed on the Castlereagh Highway, 80km outside Dubbo, with police and passers-by unable to save her.
In a devastating statement, NSW Police confirmed that the young woman died at the scene, with officers now preparing a report for the coroner.
The racing world has been left in mourning, with NSW Jockeys’ Association boss Tony Crisafi leading the tributes for the beloved young jockey. “We’ve lost a member of our family in this devastating and tragic event,” Crisafi said, his voice trembling with emotion.
“We have been left devastated by the news. On behalf of the association and our fellow jockeys, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Bronte’s family.”
Sky Racing’s Kiaarn Dickens added: “To her family, her partner Jake, her friends, her colleagues, our deepest condolences. To Bronte’s parents, from one parent to another, my heart really breaks as you begin to navigate the impossible. Bronte, may you rest in peace.”
Other jockeys, including Jett Stanley, have also paid emotional tributes to their fallen colleague, with Stanley saying: “I just want to say on the passing of jockey Bronte Simpson, I want to send my love to her family and friends. She has been taken too soon, so I just want to send my love out to all her friends and family.”
Simpson’s tragic passing marks a devastating end to a promising career that was only just beginning to flourish. Despite suffering a broken jaw in 2023, she remained committed to her dreams, saying: “I love the industry and always wanted to become a jockey.”
Simpson’s first race win earlier this year, aboard the Kristen Buchanan-trained Stylebender at Muswellbrook, was a testament to her talent and determination. “It was such a thrill to win at my first ride, and particularly for Kristen, who has been so supportive,” she said, beaming with pride.
Now, the racing community is left to mourn the loss of a bright young star, taken far too soon. Rest in peace, Bronte Simpson.
