In a devastating blow to her loved ones, a 77-year-old woman has lost her life in a freak accident on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, just two days before Christmas. The elderly woman was struck by her own vehicle in the car park of a Woolworths shopping centre on Poinciana Ave in Tewantin yesterday afternoon.
Emergency services rushed to the scene around 3.45pm, where they found the woman with critical head injuries. Despite desperate attempts by paramedics to save her, she sadly could not be revived.
Police have revealed that the woman’s white Volkswagen T-Cross reversed over its driver, with no other vehicle or person involved in the incident. The circumstances surrounding the tragedy are still unclear, but eyewitnesses described the scene as “horrific”.
Several shoppers witnessed the accident and rushed to help the woman, with one hero bystander trying to control the bleeding. One shopper, Steph Church, expressed her condolences to the woman’s family and urged those who witnessed the incident to seek support if needed.
“To the people who witnessed the accident, I hope you are OK. Please talk to someone if you need,” Ms Church told The Courier Mail. “To the gentleman who assisted in trying to control the bleeding, you did an amazing job. You were clearly shaken afterwards. Take care of yourself mate.”
A report will be prepared for the coroner as the investigation into this tragic incident continues. The community is left reeling from the news, and our thoughts are with the woman’s loved ones during this difficult time.
