LIBERAL POWER PLAY: Tim Wilson Reveals Shocking Ambition to Lead Federal Party, Saying Being Gay Won’t Hold Him Back – But Will His Colleagues Agree?
- TIM WILSON, Liberal frontbencher, drops bombshell on Politics Now podcast, revealing desire to lead federal Liberal Party
- WILSON, who has been open about his gay relationship, believes being gay won’t be a major hurdle in his leadership bid
- But will his colleagues agree? Wilson faces stiff competition from conservatives Andrew Hastie and Angus Taylor
In a candid and explosive interview, Tim Wilson has revealed his shock ambition to lead the federal Liberal Party, saying he’s not afraid to stand up for what he believes in – including being openly gay. The Liberal frontbencher, who has been a vocal advocate for climate policy reform, believes his unique perspective and leadership style could be just what the party needs to win back power.
“I think there’s a scenario where that can happen, but I think events will have to turn in my favour,” Wilson said in the Politics Now podcast. “I didn’t come here to explicitly be the leader, but I think the country and my party needs a certain intellectual leadership about where it should be heading and who it should be fighting for.”
Wilson’s comments come as the Liberal Party is in turmoil, with Sussan Ley’s leadership under pressure and conservatives Andrew Hastie and Angus Taylor emerging as potential contenders. But Wilson is confident that his own brand of liberalism – which includes a strong focus on wealth and aspiration – could be the key to winning back voters.
“I’m not afraid to argue in favour of people making a profit,” Wilson said. “I’m not afraid of standing up for people. I’ve actually believed that people should have aspiration. They should get wealthy. We should build a country where people set their eyes further to the horizon, and that I’m unapologetic in that.”
But not everyone is convinced that Wilson’s leadership bid will succeed. Some have raised concerns that his openly gay relationship could be a hurdle in the party room. Wilson acknowledges that some people may factor his sexuality into their decision-making, but believes it won’t be the primary consideration.
“I’m not going to say that some people won’t factor it in as they look at any calculus in electing a leader, but do I think it’ll be the primary consideration, like it was once, these days? Nah,” Wilson said.
As the Liberal Party continues to grapple with its leadership crisis, one thing is clear: Tim Wilson is a force to be reckoned with. With his unapologetic style and commitment to his values, he’s a dark horse in the leadership stakes – and one that could potentially shake up the party’s hierarchy forever.
