In a shocking display of violence, a 13-year-old girl was allegedly attacked by two 15-year-old girls at Melbourne’s Mordialloc Beach on December 17. The incident, which occurred near a toilet block close to Mordialloc Pier, has left the community reeling.
According to police, the two older girls approached the younger girl at around 1.30pm before allegedly launching a brutal assault. The attack was only halted when a man, believed to be aged between 50 and 60, intervened and chased the girls away.
“In a desperate bid to escape, the two girls fled the scene, leaving their young victim with minor injuries,” a police spokesperson said. “We are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or has dashcam or CCTV footage from the area at the time, to come forward and assist with our investigation.”
Following a thorough investigation, police arrested the two 15-year-old girls on Friday and interviewed them. They were later released pending further inquiries.
Meanwhile, police are also keen to speak with the brave bystander who intervened in the alleged assault. “We would like to thank this man for his quick thinking and bravery,” the police spokesperson said. “His actions undoubtedly prevented the situation from escalating further.”
In a disturbing coincidence, the same beach was the scene of a riotous brawl involving hundreds of teenagers just hours later. The riot squad was called in to restore order, while the AirWing was deployed to monitor the chaos from overhead.
Police are still investigating whether the two incidents are linked, but one thing is certain – the community is in shock over the brazen display of violence. “We will not tolerate this kind of behaviour in our community,” the police spokesperson warned. “We will do everything in our power to bring those responsible to justice.”
