In a shocking and disturbing turn of events, three young boys, aged just 9 and 10, have been arrested over a series of brazen burglaries and property damage in the small Northern Territory town of Katherine.
The alleged crime spree began on the evening of December 29, when a group of seven suspects, including the three young boys, broke into a facility on Stuart Hwy, causing damage to doors and stealing two sets of keys. Some of the stolen keys have since been recovered by police.
But the boys’ alleged rampage didn’t stop there. Between 2am and 4am on December 30, the three boys allegedly entered a fast-food restaurant on First St, causing significant damage. About 4.15am, they allegedly broke into a facility on the corner of Lindsay St and Katherine Tce, again causing significant damage before fleeing.
Later that morning, at 7.40am, police were called to a secondary school on Chambers Dr when the campus alarm was activated. Staff reported that a group of boys had entered the school, damaged several doors, and stolen cash from a donation box. Some of the stolen money was later recovered by police.
A 10-year-old boy has been charged with two counts of aggravated burglary, while the two 9-year-olds will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act 2005. The four other suspects are still at large.
“It’s extremely rare for primary school-aged children to be involved in this type of offending,” said a police spokesperson. “We urge anyone with information to come forward and report anonymously through Crime Stoppers.”
The incident has left the small town of Katherine reeling, with many residents expressing shock and concern over the alleged involvement of such young children in the crime spree.
