EXCLUSIVE: Rogue Cop Charged with Negligent Driving After Leaving Woman for Dead on NSW Highway – Almost TWO YEARS After the Horror Crash
- A serving police sergeant has been charged with negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm after a pedestrian was left injured on the side of the road.
- The shocking incident occurred on January 5, 2022, but the officer has only now been charged – sparking outrage over the lengthy delay.
- The 39-year-old victim was rushed to hospital with non-life threatening injuries after being struck by the police car on Middleton St at South Kempsey.
- The officer’s employment status is now under review as he prepares to face court on February 10.
In a damning indictment of the police force’s handling of the incident, the officer was only issued a court attendance notice on Wednesday – nearly two years after the horror crash.
On the fateful night of January 5, 2022, the male sergeant was behind the wheel of his police car, responding to a call for assistance, when he allegedly struck the 39-year-old woman on Middleton St at South Kempsey about 2.20am.
The victim was left injured on the side of the road before being taken to Kempsey Hospital suffering non-life threatening injuries. She was later transferred to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.
An investigation was launched, involving both the Crash Investigation Unit and the critical incident team, but it has taken almost two years for the officer to be charged.
“The officer’s employment status is under review,” a NSW Police spokesperson said, as the force faces scrutiny over its handling of the incident.
The officer is due to face Taree Local Court on Tuesday, February 10, and will have to answer to the charges of negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm.
