Australian cricket is holding its collective breath as one of its most beloved stars, Damien Martyn, fights for life in a Brisbane hospital. The 54-year-old was rushed to hospital on Boxing Day after becoming unwell at his Gold Coast home, and was subsequently diagnosed with meningitis – a serious inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
In a heartbreaking development, Martyn was placed in an induced coma, leaving the cricket world reeling in shock. But in a glimmer of hope, Aussie cricket great Adam Gilchrist has revealed that there are ‘positive signs’ emerging in Martyn’s recovery.
“He’s still in hospital. There’ll be more details come out as they come to hand but certainly in the last 24 hours, some positive signs are the indications coming out of the various tests he’s having,” Gilchrist said on Fox Cricket, speaking on behalf of Martyn’s family.
Gilchrist extended gratitude for the outpouring of love and support for Martyn, saying: “On behalf of Damien Martyn, a great friend, a former teammate of a few of us… on behalf of his family, Amanda his partner, thank you to everyone for the heartfelt love and wishes and care for Damien as he’s gone through and continues to go through a challenging time.”
Just two weeks ago, Martyn had uploaded a social media video from Brisbane, looking happy and healthy – a stark contrast to his current condition. The cricket world is now rallying around the 67-Test star, with players and fans from around the globe sending thoughts and prayers for his recovery.
Martyn’s cricket career was marked by incredible highs, including 4406 runs in Test cricket at an average of 46.4, and a further 5346 runs in ODIs. He was part of Australia’s dominant squads through the golden period of the early 2000s, and featured in the 2003 World Cup victory.
As the cricket world waits with bated breath for news of Martyn’s recovery, one thing is certain – the love and support for this Aussie legend will continue to pour in from far and wide.
