In a shocking turn of events, US President Donald Trump has sparked widespread condemnation and caution from world leaders after capturing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and declaring US control over the nation. The move has been met with a mixture of shock, outrage, and celebration from leaders around the globe.
China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi was quick to condemn the US, saying Beijing won’t accept any country acting as the “world’s police”. “We have never believed that any country can act as the world’s police, nor do we accept that any nation can claim to be the world’s judge,” he said.
Meanwhile, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took to social media to congratulate Trump on his “bold and historic leadership”. “Congratulations, President @realDonaldTrump for your bold and historic leadership on behalf of freedom and justice,” Netanyahu wrote.
Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese urged caution, saying the Australian government “supports dialogue and diplomacy in order to secure regional stability and prevent escalation”. However, Opposition Leader Sussan Ley welcomed the news, saying Maduro was now facing justice after serving as an “illegitimate president”.
Other world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, reacted with tempered responses, calling for a peaceful and democratic transition in Venezuela.
However, not all leaders were so measured in their responses. Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva posted a scathing statement on social media, claiming the US strikes and Maduro’s capture crossed an “unacceptable line”. “Attacking countries in flagrant violation of international law is the first step toward a world of violence, chaos, and instability,” he said.
Russia’s foreign ministry condemned the action as an “act of armed aggression”, while the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres echoed the sentiment that the US operation sets a “dangerous precedent”.
Pope Leo called for the “sovereignty” of Venezuela to be guaranteed, saying he’s following developments in the Latin American country with “deep concern”. “The good of the beloved Venezuelan people must prevail over every other consideration,” he said.
