Pandemonium erupted on Picton Road, near Cataract, north of Wollongong, on Wednesday afternoon when a semi-trailer careered out of control, slamming into six cars and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
Emergency services sprang into action, with paramedics, including a helicopter, rushing to the scene to tend to the 13 patients. A man in his 30s was left clinging to life, suffering serious injuries to his pelvis, chest and arm. He was airlifted to a Sydney hospital in a desperate bid to save his life.
Three other people were transported to Wollongong Hospital in stable conditions, but the road was left resembling a war zone, with debris scattered everywhere. The male truck driver, however, was freed from the wreckage without injury by Fire and Rescue NSW.
Specialist fire trucks were quickly deployed to contain a massive 100-litre diesel spill, which was threatening to spread. Superintendent Adam Dewberry reassured motorists that the fuel was not a threat to vehicles, saying “Rural Fire Service are providing fire protection.”
As the road remains closed in both directions, Transport NSW has warned that ongoing police investigations are expected to take some time. The incident has brought chaos to the region, with motorists advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
In a stark warning, Superintendent Dewberry urged drivers to exercise extreme caution on the roads, saying “This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers of driving and the importance of being vigilant on the roads.”
