- The crash, which occurred around 8pm on Thursday, has sparked an investigation into the cause of the tragedy, with police urging witnesses to come forward.
A night of unimaginable horror unfolded on Appin Road, Appin, as a ute and a sedan collided in a catastrophic crash that would claim the life of a teenage girl and leave two others fighting for survival.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but despite their best efforts, the 17-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the sedan, a 46-year-old man, and a 36-year-old woman, who was also in the vehicle, were taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition, with their families holding on to hope for a miracle recovery.
A 12-year-old boy, who was in the sedan, was fortunate to escape with minor injuries and was taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment. The driver of the ute, a 22-year-old man, also suffered minor injuries and was taken to Campbelltown Hospital under police guard for mandatory testing.
As the community struggles to come to terms with the tragedy, police are working tirelessly to determine the cause of the crash. The NSW Police crash investigation unit is preparing a report for the coroner, and witnesses are urged to come forward with any information that may aid in the investigation.
The crash has raised concerns about the safety of Appin Road, which is currently being upgraded and widened to accommodate the rapidly growing population in the area. Tens of thousands of homes are under construction in Appin and nearby Gilead and Wilton, putting a strain on the local infrastructure.
In a statement, police urged drivers to exercise caution on the roads, particularly in areas with high volumes of traffic. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young girl who lost her life in this tragedy,” a spokesperson said. “We urge all drivers to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road.”
