The small town of Meredith, 46km northwest of Geelong, was rocked on Monday morning when a horse transport truck careered out of control and crashed, killing the driver and three horses on board.
Truck driver Peter Butler, a well-known figure in the racing community, died at the scene despite the best efforts of emergency services to save him.
Two horses also died instantly, while a third succumbed to its injuries later.
The accident occurred on Slate Quarry Rd, a notorious stretch of road known for its tight bends and treacherous conditions. The truck, operated by South West Horse Transport, was carrying six horses at the time of the crash.
In a heart-wrenching statement, trainers Michelle and Patrick Payne paid tribute to Butler, describing him as a “character” who brought “laughter to our jumpout mornings”.
The legendary racing family expressed their “sincere condolences” to Butler’s family and friends, as well as the team at South West Horse Transport.
The Paynes also praised the emergency services, veterinarians, and members of the public who responded to the scene, saying they were “truly grateful” for their efforts.
Six horses survived the crash and are receiving treatment at Golden Plains Equine.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the racing community, with Michelle Payne taking to Instagram to express her condolences.
“Our prayers are with Pete and the Southwest Company who have done an amazing job for so many years and our hearts break for all their family,” she wrote.
