The usually picturesque Tamborine Mountain Rd was transformed into a scene of chaos and destruction on Sunday morning, as emergency services rushed to the aid of five people fighting for their lives after a horror multi-vehicle crash.
The incident occurred about 10.40am, when two cars and a motorcycle collided, trapping two people.
A man in his 70s was freed from the wreckage, while a woman, also believed to be in her 70s, was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition.
The motorcyclist, a man in his 50s, suffered “multi-system trauma” and was airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital in a life-threatening condition. Three men in their 20s, who were travelling in one of the cars, were also injured.
One of the men suffered neck, chest, stomach, and possible spinal injuries and was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a life-threatening condition. Another suffered chest, abdominal, and pelvic injuries and was airlifted to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a life-threatening condition.
The third man was initially trapped and suffered facial injuries. He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital by road in a stable condition.
Tamborine Mountain Rd, which winds through the Gold Coast hinterland, is notorious for its narrow lanes, sharp bends, and steep sections. The road was closed in both directions for much of the day but reopened late on Sunday afternoon.
Security analysts say that the incident highlights the dangers of driving on rural roads, particularly those with narrow lanes and sharp bends. “The combination of speed and inexperience can be a deadly mix,” one analyst said.
Analysis: What This Means for Australia
The incident on Tamborine Mountain Rd is a stark reminder of the risks associated with driving on rural roads. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics Australian Bureau of Statistics, rural roads account for a disproportionate number of fatalities and serious injuries.
The incident also highlights the importance of road safety measures, such as improved infrastructure and education campaigns. “The government needs to take a more proactive approach to addressing the risks associated with rural roads,” said one industry observer.
In addition, the incident raises concerns about the impact of trauma on local communities. “The emotional toll of a major incident like this can be significant,” said a psychologist.
