Cattle Truck Inferno: Hero Driver Risks Life to Save Livestock as Blaze Engulfs Semi-Trailer on NSW North Coast

A heart-stopping scene unfolded on the Bruxner Highway at Wollongbar, in northern NSW, on Thursday as a semi-trailer carrying over 60 cows caught alight, sending thick, black smoke and bright orange flames billowing into the air.
According to eyewitness Adam Wijeyekoon, the truck driver’s selfless actions put him in “serious danger” as he climbed inside the trailer to unload the top deck and free the trapped cattle.
“Unfortunately, due to the commotion, tyres exploding, thick black smoke, a few wouldn’t move,” Wijeyekoon said. “The driver was clearly distraught by the loss of cattle, and his truck is likely totalled.”
The dramatic rescue effort was captured on video, with bystanders screaming for the cattle to be freed as the driver worked tirelessly to save as many animals as possible.
“Open the gate… let them out, let them out,” drivers yelled.
“We’ve got the traffic stopped just let them out.”
Three Fire and Rescue NSW trucks and around 12 firefighters from Lismore and Goonellabah Fire Stations responded to the emergency, supported by a FRNSW Inspector. NSW Police, NSW Ambulance, and the Rural Fire Service (RFS) also attended the scene.
Firefighters deployed multiple hose lines to contain and extinguish the blaze, while also managing a diesel leak from the vehicle. The blaze was brought under control just after midday, and the cattle that escaped were herded to safety in a nearby paddock.
A vet was requested to attend to the animals, and once firefighting operations concluded, crews worked to safely decant approximately 400L diesel from the truck’s fuel tanks.
The highway has since reopened, but one eastbound lane remains closed for vehicle recovery.
