The altercation began when Kirill Basin, 40, allegedly pulled a knife on Kama Homan, a construction business owner, after a dispute over loud music.
According to Mr Homan, the situation escalated rapidly, with Mr Basin becoming increasingly irate and violent. “He was just getting more irate and violent and then saying stuff.
‘I’m going to hurt you’ or ‘I can injure you’ or ‘You like to scrap’ to the aunties,” Mr Homan told Hawaii News Now.
Mr Homan, who has mixed martial arts training, claimed he was forced to defend himself and others when Mr Basin allegedly swung a beach chair at him.
The situation turned ugly when Mr Basin allegedly pulled a knife, prompting Mr Homan to throw a punch that knocked him out cold.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for Mr Basin to be disqualified from the congressional race. Mr Basin’s attorney, Brandon Segal, has disputed the allegations, claiming there is no evidence to support the claims.
“These are just allegations. My client has a presumption of innocence,” Mr Segal said.
However, this is not Mr Basin’s first brush with the law.
In May, he was arrested on another charge of terrorist threatening in the first degree after allegedly pulling a gun on officials after storming a government building.
The court has recommended a mental health assessment for Mr Basin.
Mr Homan, who was nominated for Young Small Businessperson of the Year by the Maui Chamber of Commerce in 2024, has been hailed as a hero for his actions.
“No. I didn’t even know who the guy was,” he said, when asked if he was afraid of Mr Basin.
Mr Homan’s motto in life is to “do what’s right because that’s what we should do”.
