The idyllic Indonesian island of Bali has turned into a nightmare for an Australian family who was involved in a horrific car crash on Saturday night.
Andy Stoakes, a 44-year husband and father from Roleystone, Perth, lost his life in the freak accident, leaving behind a grieving family and a community in shock.
His wife, Julianne, who was also in the vehicle, suffered severe injuries and is now facing a long and arduous road to recovery.
The couple, along with their Balinese friend who was behind the wheel, were traveling to Denpasar to buy tiles when the Toyota Rush they were in crashed into a concrete barrier and lamp post along the Bali Mandara Toll Rd.
The driver, a friend of the family for over 10 years, had been staying with them in Jimbaran. All three were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
Despite the precautions, Andy succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital, leaving Julianne with a multitude of painful injuries, including broken ribs, sternum, and shoulder, as well as fractures in her feet and back.
As news of the tragedy spread, Julianne remembered her husband as a ‘great father and grandfather’ who was an inspiration to their family. “Both of my sons are plumbers, and my husband’s a plumber,” she told 7NEWS.
“My husband is a good tradesman of all sorts, so he actually has taught them as well from bricklaying, brickpaving, carpentry work, all that. He’s been an inspiration to all of them…
so that’s a legacy he’ll leave.” The couple’s sons, who work as plumbers, were taught various trade skills by their father, who was a skilled tradesman.
Behind the wheel was their Balinese friend who had been driving carefully, according to police. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but it is believed that a combination of factors contributed to the crash.
The incident highlights the risks and uncertainties of traveling in foreign countries, where road conditions and safety standards may differ significantly from those in Australia.
Analysis: What This Means for Australia
The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks and challenges faced by Australian travelers abroad. As the number of Australians traveling to Bali and other international destinations continues to grow, the need for awareness and preparedness becomes increasingly important.
Security analysts say that travelers must be vigilant and take necessary precautions to stay safe while traveling in foreign countries. This includes researching their destinations, staying informed about local conditions, and taking necessary safety measures such as wearing seatbelts and following local traffic rules.
Law enforcement insiders warn that the incident also highlights the importance of cooperation between Australian and Indonesian authorities in investigating and preventing such incidents.
The Australian government must work closely with its Indonesian counterparts to ensure that the necessary support and assistance are provided to Australian citizens who are involved in accidents or incidents abroad.
Industry observers believe that the incident will have significant implications for the Australian travel industry, which relies heavily on Bali as a popular tourist destination. The incident may lead to increased scrutiny of safety standards and regulations in Bali, as well as a greater emphasis on traveler safety and awareness.
In the meantime, Julianne Stoakes is facing a long and difficult road to recovery.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to support her while she is off work, and the community is rallying around her in this time of need.
As she navigates the challenges ahead, she can take comfort in the knowledge that her husband’s legacy will live on through their family and the countless lives he touched during his lifetime.
