Following the murder of Molly Ticehurst, the Prime Minister of Australia has been urged to take immediate action to prevent other women from being killed by domestic violence.
Ticehurst was allegedly killed by her ex-boyfriend, who had been free on bail for a couple of weeks despite being charged with various offences.
Some of these included multiple counts of sexual assault and stalking.
Two weeks ago, the police found the body of a young mother inside a property at Forbes in NSW’ Central West.
They were responding to a welfare call. On Tuesday, Mr Albanese was asked by Sunrise’s Natalie Barr about the government’s plan to address gendered violence in the country.
During the interview, Ms Barr asked the Prime Minister if there is a plan to address the issue of domestic violence in the country.
He responded that the government is committed to addressing this issue.
The Labor leader noted that it is unacceptable that one woman is killed by their partner every week.
As governments, Mr Albanese noted that we need to do more to address this issue.
He urged men and boys to raise awareness about this issue and provide support to those who are experiencing this type of violence.
In the previous year, the government allocated over $500 million to help women’s safety.
The funds included an $8.5 million four-year program aimed at preventing sexual and domestic violence.
The government should also provide more funding to address housing issues, which Mr Albanese said can help women escape being trapped in abusive relationships.
