On Sunday, a NSW police officer was stabbed in the head while he was on duty at Hyde Park in the city of Sydney.
He was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A man was then arrested, but no charges have been made.
Following the incident, a police operation was carried out at Elizabeth St., and various roads were closed, including Park St., between Pitt St and Elizabeth St., and Castlereagh St., near Market St.
A statement from NSW Police stated that there was no ongoing threat to the general public.
The incident occurred as NSW Parliament was considering allowing police to carry out wanding, which would allow them to inspect people with knives.
The concept of Jack’s Law, which was modeled after Queensland’s Jack’s Law, was to allow police to carry out random checks at public places, such as train stations and shopping centers.
Although the powers were restricted to certain geographical areas, such as areas where violent crimes have occurred, and where officers have made numerous charges of possessing a prohibited weapon or knives, they can still be used within the year following a stabbing.
