In response to the rising cost of living and the congestion on Queensland’s roads, the state’s Premier Steven Miles announced today that the government will implement a flat 50 cent transport fare starting August 5. The new fare will be applied to all Translink routes.
The new fare is expected to save commuters around thousands of dollars.
According to Miles, the average person can no longer afford to get much for 50 cents.
He said the government’s initiative will allow people to save money on various items, such as car parking and petrol.
He also noted that the lack of public transport has contributed to the congestion on the roads.
Cameron Dick, the Deputy Premier, noted that the trial of the 50 cent fare will encourage people to use public transportation.
He said it will result in the reduction of about 50 cars from the road for every bus and 600 cars from each train.
The government will also be investing in additional resources to accommodate the expected increase in public transport usage.
To ensure that the trial works well, Miles urged commuters to continue using public transportation.
He noted that if the trial is successful, the fare can be turned into a permanent feature after six months.
