Robert Pickton, a Canadian serial killer who abducted and killed several women on his pig farm near Vancouver in the 1990s and early 2000s, died after he was attacked in prison.
According to a statement from Canada’s Correctional Service, Pickton died due to injuries sustained during an attack on May 19.
Pickton became known as one of Canada’s most infamous serial killers due to his crimes.
A spokesperson for the RCMP said earlier this month that a 51-year-old inmate had been apprehended for assaulting the murderer.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2007 after he was found guilty of six counts of second degree murder.
He was also charged with killing 26 women.
Over two decades ago, the police searched Pickton’s farm in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, in connection with the disappearances of several women from Vancouver.
The investigation, which would last for several years, focused on the women who went missing from the area’s seediest streets.
The remains of 33 individuals were found on the property.
During his trial, Pickton admitted to an undercover officer that he killed 49 women.
Andrew Bellwood, a witness for the prosecution, said that Pickton confessed to him that he would strangle his victims and then feed their remains to his pigs.
Authorities then issued a warning to people who might have bought meat from the farm, as the meat could contain human remains.
