Cambage, who has been a controversial figure in Australian basketball, was reportedly welcomed into the Nigerian national team by one of its players.
She had not played for the country’s Opals since she withdrew from the team two weeks before the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
The incident happened during a pre-game confrontation against Nigeria, which was the country of her father’s birth.
Cambage was removed from the team after she hit an opponent in the head. Some of the players accused her of using racial slurs against them.
In 2023, she denied the allegations and stated that she was not a racist person.
News Corp Australia reported that one of Nigeria’s prominent athletes would welcome Cambage back into the team.
Elizabeth Balogun stated that if Cambage wants to play for the country, she should do so.
She noted that all Nigerian natives are accepted on the team
. The Australian player had previously stated that she tried to join the country’s national team but was not welcomed by the players.
Cambage, who was born in Melbourne and raised in China, is currently playing for the country’s She Sheena China.
After ending her successful career in the US’ National Women’s Basketball League (WNBA), she signed a contract with a Chinese team.
Balogun is part of Nigeria’s team, which made it to the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics.
She said that the team’s victory over Australia in 2021 motivated them to improve their performance.
Cambage was kicked out of a game in China during the start of the year after she committed two flagrant fouls.
After getting removed from the court, she yelled at an official before walking toward the spectators.
During the second match of the WCBA Finals, Cambage was ejected after she committed two fouls.
