The mother of a tradesman from Perth who was critically injured in a scooter crash in Bali on Sunday says his family is in a “wait game” to see how he will respond to treatment.
Shane Ramsey, from Clarkson, was on his way to watch a UFC event when he hit a pole.
His injuries include a fractured skull, bleeding in his lungs, and severe brain damage.
After undergoing surgery, he was placed in a coma to allow his brain to reduce its swelling. His mother, Catherine, said his injuries were very serious.
Although doctors have not yet identified the exact scale of his injuries, Catherine said they are waiting for him to wake up.
She said his friends were supposed to watch a mixed martial arts event in Perth on Sunday morning, but the accident happened at around 9:30.
His mother was on her way to meet him at his bedside. He and his friends have been his friends since he was very young, and they have remained at his bedside since the accident.
Catherine said they are praying for his recovery. Just three weeks ago, he had completed his carpentry apprenticeship.
He was excited to start his new career and buy a home in Perth.
The family’s main objective is to get him well enough to return to Western Australia. Due to his non-existent travel insurance, a Gofundme page has been established to help with the costs of his medical treatment and return home. Amyleigh Mitchell, one of his campaign organizers, said the cost of flying him back would be around $150,000.
The family wants to bring Shane home to be closer to his family and friends. Over $60,000 has been raised for the campaign, and Catherine said they have been overwhelmed by the support. According to her, people have told them that Shane is a selfless individual who takes very little for granted.
