The bodies of two children were discovered inside a house in the Blue Mountains on Tuesday afternoon.
Their mother was then taken to hospital after she was arrested.
The incident, which has been described as a tragedy, shocked the community.
Around 12.40pm, police were called to a home in Chapman Parade in Faulconbridge following reports of a woman and two children not being safe.
The father found the bodies of his sons, aged nine and 11, inside their home.
The incident prompted a massive police investigation.
The boys’ 42-year-old mother was taken to Westmead Hospital after suffering a self-inflicted knife wound.
According to police, she was known to them because of minor matters.

He said the residents of the Blue Mountains were shocked by the incident.
The father had contacted the police after he noticed that his children weren’t safe.
The police noted that the investigation was still in its early stages, and they were trying to piece together what occurred inside the house.
They added that the boys went to school on Monday, and they were trying to establish their last movements on Tuesday.
Superintendent Nelson stated that the police were not in a position to speculate about the incident.
They were focused on establishing the facts surrounding the incident.
A spokesperson for NSW Police stated that they were not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.
Homicide Squad detectives are now involved in the investigation, and they are looking into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
