George Negus, an Australian journalist who was one of the founding members of 60 Minutes, has been struggling with Alzheimer’s disease.
According to his son, the 82-year-old is now mostly non-verbal. He was diagnosed five years ago and has been living in a care facility in Sydney.
Ned Negus, his son, released a statement about his father’s health condition. It included a picture of the two of them on a beach.
Although he initially hesitant to post the statement on LinkedIn, he eventually decided to share it because it was something that all humans should be able to relate to.
He also noted that George’s condition had gotten worse. Ned said that the two of them went on a walk on the ocean on Father’s Day.
The journalist was unsure of what the walk was all about and had a hard time remembering who he was with.
During the walk, George started to smile and hug me. It was uplifting to see that even though he could no longer say what he felt, he still managed to do what he wanted to do.
He was able to do so because his partner, who has been with him for 40 years, was by his side. Ned also noted that her constant support helped him keep remembering things.
Ned also noted that he had a huge shout out to his journalist partner, who is also a journalist, for helping him do his job well.
Negus made his debut on ABC’s This Day Tonight before moving to 60 Minutes, where he remained until his death in 2020.
His youngest son, Serge, who is a producer for 60 Minutes, revealed in February 2022 that his father had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
In an interview with Daily Mail Australia, he said that the family was taking the new path as George faced his illness. He also thanked his friends and relatives for their understanding and support.
George continues to show the love and respect that he has for everyone, his son said. The family also appreciates the messages of support from the public.
