The Bureau of Meteorology apologized after it sent a tsunami warning to its users on Australia’s east coast.
The warning was mistakenly sent out, and the agency noted that there was no threat.
In a statement, the bureau said it was sorry for any confusion that the test may have caused.
The false alarms were sent out to the users of the BOM Weather app.
The warnings were canceled after they were issued, as the agency was transitioning to a new software for early tsunami warnings.
The users of the app were told about a tsunami threat in areas such as Tasmania, NSW, Queensland, and Victoria.
The warnings were labeled as “TEST” inside the app.
They were sent out at around 11.42 am, and the agency noted that there was no threat to Australia.
The BOM said that conducting tests is a vital part of its operations to plan for real threats.
This works alongside the JATC, which monitors and informs Australia about any potential tsunami threat.
