A woman in Townsville is in critical condition after she was attacked by a dog at her home in the early hours of Friday morning. The attack happened on Lonerganne Street in Garbutt.
Emergency services were called to the scene and attended to the woman, who suffered serious injuries to her arm.
According to the Courier-Mail, the woman’s arm was severely damaged during the attack.
The police were first on the scene and attended the woman, who was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Sergeant Scot Warrick noted that the woman’s blood loss was extensive.
The police tried to control the dog, which was reportedly a large pit bull. Unfortunately, it was euthanized at the scene as a last resort.
Warrick said that it was the only option that was available to ensure the safety of the officers and the members of the public.
The incident was regarded as the worst dog attack that he had seen in 37 years with the force.
A second dog, which was not involved in the incident, was taken into the custody of the RSPCA.
Although the police did not intend to charge the owner, they noted that under new laws, owners could be facing up to three years in jail if their dogs cause injuries or kill people.
