According to a report by the coroner, 39-year-old Helen Davey died in June after an Ottoman-style bed fell on her neck. She was reportedly leaning over a storage area for the bed.
According to Jeremy Chipperfield, she was asphyxiated after the ottoman bed fell on her.
An ottoman bed has a base that can be raised using hydraulics, which allows the user to access the storage space underneath.
These types of beds are commonly used by householders who want to keep their clothes and bedding out of sight.
According to Chipperfield, the platform on which the bed’s mattress is located suddenly fell on top of her.
Unable to free herself, Davey died of positional asphyxia due to the defective gas-lift mechanism. Her daughter, Elizabeth, found her body in her bedroom.
According to her statement, she went downstairs and found her mother lying on her back. The bedroom door had been wide open.
The condition of her legs made it appear as if she was attempting to get up. As I tried to remove the top portion of the bed from her head, it became too heavy and unstable to lift.
I had to lift it up with my foot to keep it from falling.
According to her daughter, she saw a clear indentation on her neck. She said she feared that her mother was dead as she didn’t make any sound.
She then started CPR and tried to revive her. In a letter to the public, which was obtained by the media, Jeremy said that there is a risk of similar deaths due to the defective gas-lift mechanism.
