On Monday, the family of Shirel Golan, who survived the October 7 massacre, announced that she committed suicide on her 22nd year birthday due to her battle with PTSD.
Her phone had been filled with numerous unanswered birthday messages.
Her distraught brother Eyal criticized the government for failing to provide adequate mental health care to her.
In a Facebook post, Mr. Golan stated that the state of Israel had carried out two murders of his sister, one mentally and one physically, in October 2023 and 2024.
He demanded that the government stop abusing his family.
When the terrorists from Hamas entered the event, she and her fiancé tried to drive away. Instead, they decided to hide inside their car and wait for the gunmen to arrive.
They were then offered a ride by the other terrified party-goers, but Ms. Golan refused because she had a gut feeling that it wasn’t safe.
The terrorists then ambushed the car and took 11 people hostage. A police officer named Remo then came across Ms. Golan and her partner.
After driving them to safety, he told them to run as he was going to try and save others.
The attack by Hamas from Gaza that day killed over a thousand Israelis. After going to a psychiatric facility for treatment, Ms. Golan started to show signs of PTSD.
According to her brother, she started to distance herself from her friends and withdraw from her family.
Many of the survivors of the massacre have experienced severe mental health issues since the incident. Ms. Golan is believed to be the first person to commit suicide following the incident.
The organization that provides support to the survivors of the massacre, The Tribe of Nova, released a statement regarding the death of Ms. Golan.
