Ahead of a decision by the TGA regarding the packaging of Panadol, various changes are expected to be introduced.
In 2017, the agency announced that it would reduce the maximum size of packs for general sale of paracetamol from 20 to 16.
Effective February 2025, the maximum size of packs for paracetamol will be reduced at pharmacies and supermarkets.
However, the sizes of packs for sale in pharmacies will be reduced by half.
For instance, the maximum number of tablets and capsules that can be purchased will be decreased from 100 to 50.
The decision to reduce the maximum number of packs was based on an independent report that revealed an increase in the number of people who have intentionally poisoned themselves with paracetamol in the last 10 years.
It also found that the drug is commonly used by young Australians in overdosing.
In an announcement, the agency noted that it would encourage supermarkets and pharmacies to reduce the number of packs of paracetamol they sell in order to prevent overdosing.
It also urged consumers to store the drug properly.
Panadol commenced implementing the modifications earlier than the 2025 deadline.
