In response to a question about her record attendance in the federal parliament, Lidia Thorpe, a senator from Victoria, said that she missed around a third of the sessions this year due to an injury.
She noted that she suffered a serious spinal injury after she was assaulted at a sporting event.
According to Thorpe, her doctor ordered her to take time off from work and not travel. Since she was unable to attend the parliament, a police investigation was carried out.
The senator said she decided to speak up about her situation due to the criticism she received for missing almost half of the Senate’s 44 sitting days.
The incident involving Thorpe became more prominent after she yelled at King Charles during his official visit to Australia. She was then escorted out of the Parliament House.
It was revealed that she had requested a meeting with the monarch a year ago.
She stated that she was forced to open up about her private life to defend herself. But, she added that it was just another day in Australia.
