If you’re planning to venture out in Sydney and surrounding areas, including the Northern Rivers, this week, you might want to think twice.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has warned of severe thunderstorms, flash floods, and damaging winds that could hit the region, bringing with it a whole lot of chaos.
What’s Causing the Chaos?
A wet and unstable air mass, supported by an upper trough, is moving across the eastern parts of NSW, making it the perfect recipe for wild weather. The BoM has issued safety advice to residents in metropolitan Sydney, the Illawarra, Central Tablelands, and parts of Northern Rivers, Hunter, South Coast, Southern Tablelands, Central West Slopes and Plains, and South West Slopes.
Areas That May Be Affected
Some of the areas that could be hit by the floods and hail include Sydney, Wollongong, Nowra, Orange, Goulburn, and Dubbo. Meanwhile, in the Northern Rivers, Murwillumbah, Mullumbimby, Byron Bay, Ballina, Alstonville, and Brunswick Heads are also likely to be affected.
Preparing for the Worst
So, what can you do to prepare for the wild weather? Here are some tips from the State Emergency Service (SES):
- Move your car under cover or away from trees to avoid damage
- Secure loose items around your property to prevent them from becoming projectiles in the wind
- Unplug computers and appliances where possible to avoid power surges
Watch Out for Power Lines
The SES also warned of the dangers of power lines in a storm. “Keep at least 8m away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energized, such as fences,” it said. If you come across a fallen power line, report it to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080), or Evoenergy (131 093) – as shown on your power bill.
Avoid Storm Water Like the Plague
And, most importantly, avoid storm water at all costs. “Keep clear of creeks and storm drains,” the SES said. “Don’t walk, ride your bike, or drive through flood water.” Remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
Emergency Help at Your Fingertips
If you need emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500. And, don’t forget to stay tuned for updates on the BoM website, with the next update scheduled for 5pm.
Stay safe, Sydney and Northern Rivers!
