A shocking discovery has been made in the search for Adam Yunkaporta, a man who went missing in Far North Queensland eight days ago.
On Friday night, police and wildlife officers found a crocodile along the Watson River, and forensic testing has confirmed that human remains were inside the reptile.
The Search Effort
Adam was last seen leaving his home on January 30, and it’s believed he was heading out to go fishing at the mouth of the Ward, Watson, and Archer Rivers.
Despite an extensive search effort involving helicopters, drones, SES volunteers, wildlife rangers, police, and community members, he hadn’t been seen since.
The search was conducted over land, air, and water, with foot and boat patrols scouring the area.
A Recovery Phase
On Wednesday, the search was shifted to a recovery phase, indicating that hopes of finding Adam alive were dwindling.
Police had been using “gathered intelligence” and “proven search and rescue techniques” to inform their search efforts.
The Discovery
The crocodile was found on Friday night, and forensic testing was completed on Saturday to confirm the presence of human remains.
The news has been met with shock and sadness, and Adam’s family has been notified. Further testing will be conducted to formally identify the remains.
Remembering Adam
Adam, a First Nations man, was described as having brown eyes and short, dark hair. He was last seen wearing black shorts and a blue fishing shirt with a picture of a barramundi on it.
Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
