A devastating house fire in Maryborough, north of Ballarat, has left a community in shock after a man lost his life and a two-year-old child was left fighting for their life.
The blaze, which occurred at a single-storey home on Barr Street, has also injured three others, including two women and a three-year-old child.
The Blaze: What Happened
Firefighters battled the fire for almost half an hour after it broke out just after 11:30 am. Despite their best efforts, a man was pulled from the home suffering cardiac arrest and couldn’t be revived.
The toddler, who was also rescued from the burning building, was airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a serious condition.
Investigation Underway
A crime scene has been established around the home, and police, along with the arson squad, are working to determine the cause of the fire.
While it’s too early to say what sparked the blaze, Senior Sergeant David Flood said a thorough investigation will be conducted.
The fire is not being treated as suspicious at this stage.
A Community in Shock
The incident has sent shockwaves through the small town of Maryborough, with many residents knowing the victims.
“For a rural country town, obviously people are well known and well connected, so this is tragic… It’s unexpected,” said Senior Sergeant Flood.
